ALTERNATIVE SANCTIONS
Per Florida Statute 985.037, “Upon determining that a child has committed direct contempt of court or indirect contempt of a valid court order, the court may immediately request the alternative sanctions coordinator to recommend the most appropriate available alternative sanction and shall order the child to perform up to 50 hours of community-service manual labor or a similar alternative sanction, unless an alternative sanction is unavailable or inappropriate, or unless the child has failed to comply with a prior alternative sanction.”
The Alternative Sanctions Program maintains an array of alternative for youth in contempt of court. This may include youth who have violated Home Detention or Failed to Appear (FTA). As a result, the youth may be sanctioned to a number of days in the juvenile Detention Center. Through this program, eligible youth may instead be offered a community-based alternative. These include but are not limited to: community service projects, evening reporting centers, Read to Succeed, electronic monitoring, and participation in mentoring or workshops.
JUVENILE EDUCATION CLINICS
Juvenile Education Clinics (JEC) are structured workshops for court-involved youth, which are engaging and educational, motivating youth to become productive citizens. Subject matter includes, but is not limited to: delinquency records, jobs, teen dating violence, and weapon safety/prevention. They can be used as Alternative Sanctions, conditions of Probation or any other time the Court deems appropriate. These Clinics will be held on Thursday evenings (6:00-8:00pm) at the Juvenile Assessment Center in West Palm Beach and are provided at NO COST to the youth/family. (see attached schedule 2012
